What kind of visa do I need as a foreign researcher in Israel?
There are several types of visa for visiting researchers:
B-2 (Tourist visa) - Issued to visiting scientists and to accompanying persons, before arrival or upon arrival at the airport, depending on nationality. This visa can be extended by the Ministry of the Interior for up to a maximum of 24 consecutive months. 
A-2 visa - Issued to students and postdoctoral fellows (includes multiple entries). 
A-4 visa - Issued to accompanying persons of A-2 visa holders (includes multiple entries).  
B-1 visa (Authorization to work temporarily) - Granted to persons possessing a signed contract with an Israeli employer. Valid for up to 54 months.
